Successful Educational Conference Series
On September 8, 2000, C & M held an
educational conference entitled Emergency Department APCs:
Implementation Strategies, at the New Orleans Hilton Riverside.
Participants from across the state attended the conference, which
featured nationally recognized speakers Karen Marsh, RN, MSN,
president of Kare-Med Consulting, in Pembroke Pines, Florida,
and Robert Kottman, MD, CEO of Alamo Physician Services in Universal
City, Texas. Conference attendees learned the latest HCFA policies
on the outpatient prospective payment system (OPPS) and ambulatory
payment classifications (APCs) as they pertain to the emergency
department.
Our second conference of the year, EMTALA
2000: Update on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor
Act, took place on December 1, 2000, also at the New Orleans
Hilton. Over one-hundred and sixty persons from four states attended
the seminar.
Featured speakers included David Wright,
a representative from the Health Care Finance Administration (HCFA),
and Robert Bitterman, J.D., M.D., F.A.C.E.P., director of risk
management and managed care at the Carolinas Medical Center in
Charlotte, North Carolina. Other presenters were Stephen Frew,
J.D., of the Frew Consulting Group in Rockford, Illinois; Nicholas
Gachassin, Jr., J.D., of the Gachassin Law Firm in Lafayette,
Louisiana; John Lipson, M.D., M.B.A., of Medical Staff Support
Services in Columbus, Indiana; Tony Sun, M.D., M.B.A., medical
director, and Richard Shaiman, M.D., associate medical director,
both of the Louisiana Health Care Review in Baton Rouge.
