More Red Tape To Maintain Your Medical License

Effective January 1, 2002, each physician must complete twenty (20) hours of CME in order to have an active license to practice medicine in Louisiana, as mandated by the Louisiana state legislature.

  • All physicians must complete 20 hours of CME each year, starting this year (2001).
  • CMEs must be Category I as recognized by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). See web sites for details.
  • The Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners will send a form for annual documentation and certification of CMEs with each renewal or reinstatement application. The form should be completed and returned with the license renewal or reinstatement application.
  • Physicians must keep 4 years of CME records.
